The Ann Arbor Shake Shack opened on Monday, July 15, 2019. We were in the neighborhood for a late dinner, so decided to check it out on opening night.
Ann Arbor Shake Shack Food
Shake Shack’s specialties are burgers and custard milkshakes and Concretes. They also offer hot dogs and chicken.
I decided to go with their specialty – a Shack Burger. The burger is offered in both a single or double size. I went with the Single. It includes cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Shake Sauce.
They also offer a Smoke Shack burger that includes Applewood Smoked Bacon and chopped cherry peppers. I thought my husband might order this, but he also opted for a Shack Burger.
For the simpler eaters, they offer a plain Hamburger and Cheeseburger.
My daughter decided on the Chick’n Shack. It is a breaded chicken breast with lettuce, pickles, and buttermilk herb mayo.
They also offer Chick’n Bites which are an option for the child who likes chicken nuggets. BBQ or honey mustard dipping sauces are available.
Shake Shack also sells flat top grilled hot dogs. The signature hot dog is the Shack-cago Dog with relish, onion, cucumber, pickles, tomoto, pepper, and mustard. They also offer a plain Hot Dog or Chicken Dog.
There are a couple of options for vegetarians on the menu.
The ‘Shroom Burger is a fried portobello mushroom filled with muenster and cheddar and topped with lettuce, tomato, and ShackSauce. They also offer a Grilled Cheese with American Cheese on a grilled potato bun.
Shake Shack serves Crinkle Cut Fries. They are available as Fries, Cheese Fries, and Bacon Cheese Fries.
My family of 3 shared 2 orders of Fries. For our family of 3, two orders was a bit too much, but one order would not have been quite enough.
Of course Shakes are a big menu item at Shake Shack. Funnily enough, no one in our family ordered a milk shake. I opted for a Concrete – a blended custard instead. My daughter had ice cream earlier in the day on her road trip and my husband didn’t want a milk shake
Concretes & Custard
Shake Shack serves custard and uses that in their shakes.
Concretes are custard blended with mix-ins. The Ann Arbor Shake Shack has a custom menu of concretes with local ingredients or names. The Shack Attack features a Zingerman’s Bakehouse Black Magic Brownie. I was tempted by the Wolverine Dream – marshmallow sauce, graham crackers, and strawberry puree.
I ordered a Pie Oh My Concrete. It is a blend of Vanilla Custard with seasonal Zingerman’s Bakehouse pie (it was cherry pie yesterday). 5% of the sales from Pie Oh My are donated to The ChadTough Foundation.
Shake Shack has Coca-Cola products in their self-serve soda fountain. They also offer house made lemonades and iced tea. My daughter enjoyed their strawberry mint lemonade. I took a sip and thought it was good, but not very lemony.
As a water drinker, I appreciated that water and cups were available at the condiment station. I loved that they were the same size cup as my husband had for a fountain beverage and not the smaller cups that many places use as water cups.
Ann Arbor Shake Shack Restaurant
Shake Shack had enough seating – even on opening day. They offer booths and a couple of long bar-height tables with stools. High chairs are available.
Our table was stamped that it was made from recycled bowling lanes. What a great use for them.
Shake Shack offers outdoor seating on their patio. Several of the tables had umbrellas. If you are sitting outside they offer outdoor games – cornhole and large scale Jenga.
Location & Hours
The Ann Arbor Shake Shack is in Arbor Hills Shopping Center. Their address is 3030 Washtenaw Ave, Suite #107, Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Their hours are 11a-10p daily.
Shake Shack is a counter service restaurant. You place your order and receive a buzzer while they prepare your food. It took our food about 10 minutes to be ready.
If you are in a hurry, Online Ordering will be available. They had the rack setup for online order pickup. However, their website still lists the Ann Arbor location as coming soon so online ordering is not available yet.
Ann Arbor Shake Shack with Kids
While Shake Shack does not have a dedicated kids menu, it is still a good place to take kids.
Kid Friendly Food
Shake Shack does not have a kids menu. However, several options mentioned above are great choices for them.
- Hot Dog
- Grilled Cheese
- Chick’n Bites
High Chairs are available to pull up to tables. I did not count the number exactly, but I saw 3 or 4 in one place and another one elsewhere.
Both the women’s and men’s restroom have signs outside the door indicating a changing table. I am glad to see that they have one in the men’s room. Too often when my daughter was younger, they were only in the women’s room.
Our Shake Shack Review
For a number of years, I heard people singing the praises of Shake Shack. A couple of years ago in Chicago we visited our first Shake Shack. I had been expecting a sit-down restaurant – more of an upscale Steak & Shake than a counter service restaurant. So I was a bit disappointed.
Visiting the Ann Arbor Shake Shack, I knew what to expect. So I was not disappointed this time. We found the service to be excellent. While we were there I did not notice any first day issues.
Overall, I don’t find Shake Shack that different than Elevation Burger which is up the street. From a menu perspective, I prefer Elevation Burger since they have a grilled chicken option and have a side salad available. However, Shake Shack has a better location than the Washtenaw Ave Elevation Burger.

Bigalora is another restaurant in Arbor Hills that is a great family choice.
