AAPS Back to School 2014-2015

First Day of School – 2012

I just found that Ann Arbor Public Schools has their Back to School Guide posted on their website. The Back To School Guide includes useful information about schedules, busing, lunch accounts, and more. The Back to School Information Page also includes links to specific guides for each high school, lunch information, bus safety, etc.

The back to school guide includes information on the breakfast/lunch program. Prices are unchanged for the 2014-2015 school year ($2.50 for elementary school lunch). Lunch accounts can be loaded and monitored online through MyPaymentsPlus although  There is a $2 fee for online payments through MyPaymentsPlus or you can send a check made out to Ann Arbor Public Schools Food Services. Last year I sent in a check monthly. This year I am contemplating loading a larger sum onto the account online. Even if you pay by check, you can use a MyPaymentsPlus account to monitor your child’s lunch account. I believe you will need your child’s student ID number to setup their account. Parents of new students to the district will probably need to wait to receive this information to setup their child’s lunch account. If your child might qualify for a free or reduced price lunch, you can fill the application out now and mail them to the district to speed up your approval process.

The Back to School Guide includes the date for Curriculum Night at each of the district’s elementary schools. It also includes information for Registration for Middle and High School Students which begin August 20.

I know three years ago as an incoming Kindergarten parent, I was desperate for information. Now, I am much more relaxed knowing that information will not come until a few days before school starts. So for new parents here are the key facts that I have learned the last three years:

  • There is no supply list for Ann Arbor Public Schools. They ask that you send your child with a backpack. It is best to have a backpack large enough to fit their snow pants, hat, gloves, shoes, and lunch. I know my daughter brought her snow pants to school daily in the winter. Even when there is not snow on the ground, they keep her warm (& somewhat dry/clean when snow starts to melt). A lunch box/bag is also helpful if they will be bringing lunch from home.
  • The week before school begins you will receive a packet from your child’s school with information on their teacher and other school specific information. I wish they would send some of this information out earlier saving only the teacher information until the week before school starts. For example, when my daughter was in Kindergarten we received our pack on Thursday and the next afternoon, Friday, was a meet and greet for all kindergarteners with the teachers. Since the event was for all classes, there was no reason that communication about the event needed to wait for the class list distribution.

One other item to note, August 25 is the deadline to register your child for before or after-school care beginning with the first week of school.

Ann Arbor with Kids is your go-to source for Ann Arbor Family Fun. It got its start in an activity list that I was compiling for the playgroup I ran at our church. When my daughter started preschool, the other moms were thrilled to hear about my list. I decided to take the list public in 2009.
